How to be Successful in Network Marketing

Before you start rolling your eyes at another "Hey girl" side gig post >> read this.

Let me start by saying that I've been doing network marketing for the past 6 years. I've been BURNED and I've been successful. I eagerly joined a network marketing company back in 2015. I worked my butt off to create content, share the products, and recruit people as customers and business partners in hopes of moving my way up the success ladder to make big commissions.

The problem was that I was losing my time, my money, and my sanity in the process.

I hit all the stereotypical problems that MLM companies seem to have, and I had to bail.

I made mistakes that many people make when jumping into a network marketing company from lack of understanding. Since moving on from that company, and joining a new one, I've been able to assess my successes, failures, and how to actually make a business work.

What To Look For.

  1. Products you actually believe in. Obviously. You're not going to run out of the gates and sell products that you don't even like. Make sure it's something you use so you can share your lifestyle!

  2. Products that are consumable. It just makes sense, right? If you're selling something that your customers aren't going to come back and reorder, you're losing a significant client base and will have to constantly be trying to sell to new people in order to make money.

  3. Easy compensation. Fast start bonuses. Easy commissions. The BIGGEST thing for me was that I didn't want to have to spend money to make money. At my old company, I was required to make a PERSONAL purchase of 100PV/month ($120), while making a 2% commission. THAT DID NOT WORK. There was no way to make money.

  4. No required sales quotas. This one was huge for me. I've seen people go into MAJOR debt for their network marketing businesses because they were required to hit a monthly sales quota in order to keep their business active. Sure, the quota makes you hustle hard, but if you don't have the sales and you have to pick up the bill by yourself, it will be incredibly difficult to stay afloat.

  5. No required inventory. The best way to thrive in direct marketing is when you can have a direct to customer sales ability, like a personal website, and not have to keep an inventory of products. AKA cut out the middle man and all your shipping costs! And another thing, don't PAY for your website every month!

How to Succeed.

These are my tips besides looking for a company that checks all the points above.

  1. Be consistent. The work you put in now may not show any results for 90 days. If you give up because you don't see immediate results, you'll never make it. If you seem flaky in your consistency, people may think your business is flaky too.

  2. Be relational. If you make it about sales, you will fail. Focus on SERVING people and GENUINELY wanting to increase their quality of life. If you present your products/business to someone and they say 'no', KEEP THE RELATIONSHIP. Don't use people for your profitable gain and dump them if they aren't earning you money. And don't even think about those cold "hey girl" messages on social media ... they don't work.

  3. Follow up. This. Is. Huge. Read my story below!

A few months back, I was looking to get back into an exercise routine. I started following a girl on Instagram who incorporates faith with fitness. I knew that she worked for a direct marketing fitness company, one that I had been a part of a few years back. I was interested in reenrolling in membership in order to do post-partum exercises in one of their programs.

She started a chat to see if I was interested in learning more about her programs, and asked why I didn't like working out, and was wondering if maybe I hadn't found the right program yet. I listed off a bunch of programs (including the company she worked for) that I had used in the past. I, secretly, was interested in finding out how she could fit me into a new fitness program that the company had to offer.

She never responded.

I was 100% WILLING and READY to sign up with her, but she wrote me off. She LOST a new possible client because she didn't feel the need to respond AND she had built our "relationship" off of me joining her business. When I didn't, we had no relationship left. Imagine if she would have continued to comment on my posts and send me encouraging messages - she would probably have a new client!

For me, being an Independent Consultant with Arbonne has not only been the best decision I've made financially, but it's been so life-giving as I build a team and serve my community.
